Let's decode a motorcycle tyre
Our example is a common motorcycle tyre size: 180/55 ZR17 M/C (73W) TL.
180 — Tyre Width
The first number is the nominal width of the tyre in millimetres. In this example, the tyre is approximately 180 mm wide.

There is more information printed around the sidewall than just the tyre size.
DOT Identification
A DOT marking identifies the tyre and contains information associated with its manufacture. The final digits can identify the production week and year.
Rotation Direction
An arrow on the sidewall shows the direction the tyre should rotate when the motorcycle is moving forward.
Tubeless or Tube Type
TL normally indicates a tubeless tyre. TT indicates a tube-type tyre designed to be used with an inner tube.
Approval Markings
You may see E-mark or other approval markings showing that the tyre meets applicable regulatory requirements.
Front / Rear
Some tyres are specifically designed for front or rear wheel use. Always follow the manufacturer's fitting instructions.
Load & Pressure
The sidewall may also show maximum load and inflation information. Your motorcycle manufacturer's recommended pressures should be followed.
